Community Outreach Coordinator
LOCATION: Work from home, field office at Kīholo Bay, and community events in north Kona and south Kohala.
HOURS: Part-time, 20 hours per week, weekend and evening work required for community events and meetings
PAY RATE: $18-$23 per hour based on experience

SUMMARY
We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Community Outreach Coordinator to join our team. This position is funded by a 3-year federal grant focused on increasing resilience in Puʻuwaʻawaʻa Ahupuaʻa. The Community Outreach Coordinator will support and coordinate community events, conduct interviews, and develop materials to increase understanding of the significance of Kīholo Bay, Puʻuwaʻawaʻa, and Puʻuanahulu ahupuaʻa, while protecting confidential and sensitive information. They will help schedule and conduct learning activities including field trips, camping trips, hikes, talk stories, presentations, film screenings, oral history interviews, and media content creation. They will participate in team meetings, work events, retreats, and celebrations. They will provide information to team members who develop grant and funding proposals to seek resources for the continuance of this position beyond the current 3-year term. The overall goal of this position is to strengthen aloha ʻāina and support for Hui Aloha Kīholo’s important mission.
ORGANIZATION
Founded in 2007, Hui Aloha Kīholo’s mission is to protect, perpetuate, and enhance the cultural and natural landscape of the Kīholo Bay area through collaborative management and active community stewardship. With a small staff and a large group of passionate volunteers, we strive to keep the Kīholo Bay area thriving and perpetuate the knowledge and traditions of Pu‘uwa‘awa‘a ahupuaʻa. Our work involves leading education and conservation activities, managing weekend camping, empowering an active community of stewards, fundraising, and engaging with partners to support aligned efforts and share lessons learned.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Work with the Education and Content teams to develop clear and visually appealing educational content related to the cultural, environmental, and historic significance of the plants, animals, and people of Puʻuwaʻawaʻa ahupuaʻa that incorporates traditional and modern scientific knowledge
Work with the Cultural team to schedule, prepare for, and conduct interviews with knowledge/rights holders with deep ties to Kekahawaiʻole
Ensure that all informant knowledge is correctly protected, catalogued, and, if authorized by interviewees, used and attributed within specific parameters
Lead creation of high-quality media content for sharing online
Participate in community events as a representative of Hui Aloha Kīholo including, but not limited to, festivals, ceremonies, family gatherings, community service, school trips, and mālama ʻāina stewardship
Schedule and organize community meetings and events for Hui Aloha Kīholo to share directly with Puʻuwaʻawaʻa and Puʻuanahulu community members
Ensure outstanding communication with partners, kupa ʻāina, kama ʻāina, kanaka maoli, visitors, practitioners, scientists, learners, and others with connections to Kīholo
TRAVEL REQUIRED
Occasional travel within North Kona region may be required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
At least 1.5 years experience teaching, developing content, sharing information or supporting events for a local audience in Hawaiʻi
Excellent communication skills
Knowledge of Hawaiian places, species, and practices in north Kona
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
Reliable internet and phone service
Reliable transportation and valid Driver’s License
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Familiar with Kīholo, Puʻuwaʻawaʻa, and local ecosystems
ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, pidgin English, and standard English fluency
Experience using print and video content creation software
Experience scheduling and preparing for meetings and events
Experience participating in important regional community activities such as making ʻimu, rodeo, makahiki festival, high school graduation, hunting, fishing, and ʻāina work
Familiarity with mauka-makai, ahupuaʻa, and mālama ʻāina concepts
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is both desk and field based
Desk work includes sitting or standing for long periods and working on a computer
Outdoor activities may involve standing, public speaking, hiking, stooping, swimming, wading, landscaping, and hauling vegetation in arid, rainy, and windy conditions
Outdoor work environment with potential exposure to rough terrain, inclement weather, and wildlife
